Book Digitization & Recaptcha @ UWF Libraries

Are you wishing to comment about what UWF libraries are up to through the libraries’ weblog? Well, we encourage you but now there will be a test before your comment is posted to verify that you are human!

 

 Patrons and staff may be noticing strange new little red boxes at the bottom of the UWF Libraries suggestion forms, intranet wiki and comments section of the Books and Bytes Weblog asking patrons to read a couple words against a blurred background before submitting a form,  weblog comment or  wiki entry.    This is  not simply a test though but new cutting edge spam protection security technology called “RECAPTCHA” that both prevents spam and helps digitize books.

Peruvian Collections at UWF

A glass cabinet exhibit adjacent to the library elevators highlights items from the Peruvian Collections held by the Special Collections Department, John C. Pace Library.   Although our collections emphasize West Florida, the University and Pensacola have historic ties with Peru, and the Department holds an extensive book collection of early Peruvian history.

UWF Libraries Receive Peruvian Gifts

 The UWF Libraries recently received an eight volume set, “El hombre peruano en su historia,” (The Peruvian Man’s History) by Eugenio Alarco. The family of the author offered to give this set of books to any university chosen by Fernando Andrade Carmona, former mayor of Miraflores, Peru and his wife, Marie Denise Dargent de Andrade. The University of West Florida was selected to receive the donation in honor of the Sister City Agreement that was established in the 1960’s between Pensacola and Miraflores, Peru.  The presentation was made by Señor Andrade. Accepting on behalf of the university was Helen Wigersma, Interim Dean, University Libraries.
