The semester is over and the holidays have finally arrived. Now you have the time to read a book just for pleasure. There are many wonderful titles that you might have checked out from the UWF Library, but what if you forgot to do that before you left campus? Not to worry. The library has over 90,000 books available in full-text online for you to read on your laptop in the comfort of your very own rocking chair or hammock.
You may easily find these titles by looking for one of two databases: “NetLibrary” has almost 40,000 titles, including some 3,500 classics and “Ebrary” has around 38,000 titles.
You may search either of these databases for a title in a subject area of your choice or you may just browse the titles by typing in the name of either database in the “Basic Search” line of the library’s online catalog. You may sort the electronic books (e-books) by author, title, or by subject, select one and start reading the book online right that minute.
Both NetLibrary and Ebrary have handy help screens to get you started.

As mentioned in a previous Books & Bytes post, one of the UWF Libraries’ Strategic Plan goals is to develop the “Library as Place: Create a physical environment that supports all forms of learning, discovery, exchange, design, experimentation, and instruction.”
The concepts of “library as place” and “library as destination” are active topics of discussion in the library profession. Although more prominent in the public library community, these concepts are taking root and flowering in the academic environment as well.

UWF Libraries online digital library collections are relatively new and in exciting stages of development. The oldest collection, The Bell Photo History Archive or West Florida Photohistory Collection , consists of approximately 20358 images with accompanying metadata of West Florida history 1911-1949.
This application is hosted through a digital application called Digitool and is an important part of the larger Florida State University Libraries PALMM project (Publication of Archival Library and Museum Materials) which includes digitized historical source material and virtual collections for all areas of Florida.

A second more recent University of West Florida 40th Anniversary Image Archive (2007) consists of approximately 300 images from the past 40 years of the University’s history as an interactive organic digital archive. This application is an opensource Weblog optimized to operate as an interactive image archive. Information on the technological background for this project is available here.
A third collection, THE UWF Archives Special Collections Holdings Databases consists of searchable finding aids called “EAD’s”(Encoded Archival Documents) of the 700 specialized individual historical collections making up the West Florida Archives and Special Collections. This digital collection was done through the Open Source digital archives product, Archon, an acronym for Archives Online.
The University of West Florida is also part of the Florida Heritage Digital Collection and these artifacts (20133 artifacts) and collections can be found by searching through the library catalog or Archives Florida.
More information on some of these larger digitization efforts can be found on UWF Libraries Dept of Digital and Learning Technologies homepage.
