Old UWF Flag
The first flag of UWF featured the date “1963” in Roman Numerals. This was the year that the Florida Legislature first appropriated funds for the building and creation of the University of West Florida to open for classes in the Fall of 1967.
Also in the Fall 1963, the Board of Control (later Board of Regents) approved the 1,000 acre campus by Nine Mile Road and the 150 acre tract on Santa Rosa Island as the sites for UWF. The original University of West Florida flag was created in 1971, and later changed to the present version in 2003.

Nautilus Shell
The Nautilus shell is emblazoned on the University’s first insignia which appeared in print in early 1967 on the University’s premiere catalog. First President Crosby noted in a 1965 report of the University’s natural relationship to the sea, and in his first commencement address in 1968, that “education is an inherent part of living, because it is a necessary condition of growth” and “growth involves a continuing series of beginnings.” Incorporating Oliver Wendell Holmes’ poem, “The Chambered Nautilus,” Crosby fostered UWF’s guiding principles of growth through education ‘by life’s unresting sea” embodied in the symbol of the Nautilus shell.
