Participating in the December 1984 Commencement was six-month-old Suzie Bourgeois of Pensacola, who was carried across the podium by her parents, Richard and Suzie Bourgeois who both received B.A. degrees in Computer Science. Because the couple met at UWF, they wanted their baby to share in the commencement activities. (F January 4, 1985).

Colonel James Buchli, astronaut and graduate of Class of 1975 with a degree in aeronautical engineering, returned to UWF in March 1985 to present the University (Larry McDaniel, UWF Foundation) with memorabilia flown aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery in January 1985. Some of these items can be see in the Special Collections Department, John C. Pace Library, and on the walls of the Alumni Room, Building 12. [need to double check this, be sure they are his and not one of the other three Astronaut alumni].Buchli retired from the U.S. Marine Corps and the NASA Astronaut Office in 1992. His missions for NASA included STS-51C (Discovery, 1985), STS-61A (Challenger, 1985), STS-29 (Discovery, 1989), and STS-48 (Discovery, 1991).

Nancy T. Gilliam, UWF graduate of 1970, earned her law degree in 1972 from the Florida State University. Returning to Pensacola to practice law, she was asked to help start, and then direct the UWF program in Legal Studies. She was named to the bench in 1988, and became the first woman judge of the First Judicial Circuit in 1994. Here, she tries on her robe for the first time as newly-appointed judge, while her husband, Tom Gilliam, a UWF faculty member, observes.

Dr. Harold Bryan Crosby was the University’s founding President and oversaw the creation and construction of Florida’s first upper-level (senior) University. After returning to teaching in 1974, he was later named President of Florida International University where he served from 1976 to 1979.

Dr. James A. Robinson, previously President of Macalester College, St. Paul, MN (1971-1974), and vice president for academic affairs and provost at Ohio State University, became UWF’s 2nd President in December 1974. Major changes under Dr. Robinson included adding freshmen and sophomore classes, the restoration of the Saenger Theatre, and major increases in UWF endowment funds.

Dr. Morris Marx came to UWF as its 3rd President in 1988 from the University of Mississippi, Oxford, where he was vice chancellor for academic affairs. Changes during his tenure included major expansion of the Fort Walton Beach campus, the UWF-Kobe Japan campus, and the change of governance to a local Board of Trustees.

Dr. John C. Cavanaugh became UWF’s 4th President in July 2002, coming to the University from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Dr. Cavanaugh has overseen the growth of the University in community interaction through the West Florida Historic Preservation, Inc., the Maritime Park and Museum, and in raising the University’s image nationally with a goal of making UWF the best regional comprehensive university in America.

Pierre Huybregts
Pierre Huybregts joined UWF as Professor of Piano in 1970. He was born in Antwerp and graduated from the Royal Academy there. His musical studies included Vienna, Paris, and the Royal Conservatory in Brussels, leading up to his New York musical debut at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall in 1981 and his selection as a Steinway artist in 1991. He produced 10 phonograph albums and over ten musical CDs, especially of his two-piano arrangements of Gershwin, and other classical pieces. He concretized extensively in the United States and Europe, and orchestral performances included the Belgian National Orchestra, l’Orchestre de Versailles, the New Orleans Symphony, and the Brussels Flemish Chamber Orchestra. Dr. Huybregts was a much loved and respected faculty member of UWF until his death in February 2003.
