Vince Whibbs at Commencement
Vince Whibbs awarded UWF Honorary Degree, the Doctor of Public Service, at Commencement December 15, 1984 in recognition of his outstanding service to community organizations such as United Way, Junior Achievement, Chamber of Commerce, and Pensacola Council on the Navy League. He was also a member of the University of West Florida Foundation as well as trustee of Pensacola Junior College and a member of Springhilll College Board of Regents (Mobile, AL). He is more known as Pensacola’s long-time Mayor. |

Luna Anchor
This 438-year-old anchor was raised from the Emanuel Point Shipwreck archaeology site on October 29, 1997 by the UWF Archaeological Institute. The anchor, believed to be from one of Tristan de Luna’s ships, weighs 950 pounds. Seven of Luna’s ships were destroyed by a hurricane that struck Pensacola in September 1559; their loss, especially of supplies, doomed the early colony in La Florida. |

Maritime Entrance
In 2006, city residents voted to establish the Community Maritime Park on Pensacola Bay in downtown Pensacola. Plans for the park include a stadium, conference center, maritime museum, space for UWF education and programs, as well as commercial and retail space. This architectural rendition depicts the planned entrance to the park, scheduled to open in 2009. |
