Campus Parking
A view of a parking lot at UWF circa 1973. Opened in September 1967, the University of West Florida was an upper-level institution offering junior, senior, and master’s degrees. With limited campus housing, most of the student body commuted to campus, many of them being adults with families, working full-time and taking courses at night. The “cheap” student transportation of choice in the early 1970s was the Volkswagon Beetle (Bug). How many do you see in this picture?

Computers 1982
Computing at UWF began with university data processing services designed to handle accounting, budgeting, payroll, data spreadsheets and the like. Shown here is Pam Catone, a systems operator for the university computer center monitoring the brain of the center in July, 1984. By the early 1980s, computing demands led to the design and construction of Building 79, to combine administrative computer services, the academic systems science programs, and the Institute for Statistical and Mathematical Modeling.

Halloween
The annual Staff Council Halloween Costume Contest was begun in 1978 and held annually for over twelve years. Prizes were awarded for most original, scariest, and funniest categories. Often entire departments would create an ensemble such as Wizard of Oz, or Thanksgiving.
This photograph comes from the Ninth Annual Contest in 1986 of the winners of the first place in Most Original. It is the “Six Pack of Person Ale” featuring staff of the Personnel Department (Debra Hyder, Sherrell McClure, John Parker, Bobbie Jo Agerton, Becky Walker and Gene Weissinger)

Festival on the Green Crafts
UWF traditionally held a “Spring” festival called Springcoming, which was later retitled “Festival on the Green.” After a period of hiatus, FOG was revived in 2001, and since then, annually, FOG features a crafts fair, fine arts show, children’s festival, food, open houses, and entertainment.

WUWF-FM 88.1 signed on the air on January 15, 1981 when President James Robinson and Station Manager Tom Perry threw the switch sending power to the transmitters. The station had been suggested by the Student Government Association in 1972. This photograph shows the “new” WUWF” van (circa 1985) as the station moved into areas of outreach and remote broadcasting.
