One of the exciting aspects of learning are challenges such as the task of building something that would protect an egg from breaking if it is dropped from a height. Here, Physics students try their egg-dropping experiments from the roof of the UWF Library in March 1970.

The UWF Houseboatwas utilized by the Department of Biology to carry out water and fauna sampling of Escambia Bay. The boat was based at Ellyson Dock, and this image shows the boat in October of 1972.

Water Fountain Sculpture
Art Department produces sculpture water fountain for courtyard of Building 10, July 1972. When Building 10 opened in 1967, it featured an open courtyard with plants and a small pool for water lilies. In this photograph, the Art Department sculpts a water fountain for the Building 10 courtyard in July 1972. The courtyard disappeared in the Building 10 remodeling in the late 1990s when it was renamed Crosby Hall.

Building 70 at UWF housed the Vocational and Technical Program for many years. Shown here is a wood shop class with Dr. Charlie Wentz (center, back), January 1978.
In the 1990s when Vo-Tech disbanded, Building 70 became the new home of UWF Duplicating Services (UWF Printing).

Rayburn-Dirken Institute
Sam Rayburn-Everett McKinley Dirksen Institute of Applied Politics, the only institute in the nation focusing on the political campaign process, was approved by the Board of Regents in the Fall 1984.
Board of Directors included John Amos, U.S. Senator Lawton Chiles, Senator Jeremiah Denton (AL), U.S. Representative Jack Edwards, as well as U.S. Representative Claude Pepper, and former U.S. Representative Bob Sikes among many local leaders.
The Institute was dedicated by U. S. Representative Jim Wright (D-Texas) July 6, 1985. Shown in this photograph are (left to right):
U.S. Representative Robert L. F. Sikes, U.S. Representative Jim Wright, Virginia Bass (Florida legislator), U.S. Senator and former Florida Governor Bob Graham, UWF Professor Jim Witt, U.S. Representative Earl Hutto, and Pensacola Mayor Vince Whibbs.

In January 2007, Helen Wentworth made a significant gift to UWF, in honor of her husband, Warren, allowing the Department of Music to buy 18 Steinway pianos and earn the prestigious designation as an “All-Steinway School.” Warren’s father, T. T. Wentworth, previously had donated his lifetime collection of historical memorabilia to the University.
